Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for compact growth and the best silver foliage colour. Tolerates very light shade but may become less compact.
Soil:
Well-drained soil. Prefers poor to moderately fertile soils, especially sandy or gravelly types. Avoid heavy, wet soils, particularly in winter. Thrives in neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
Exposure:
Best in open, sunny, and well-ventilated positions. Tolerates exposed sites and dry conditions. Hardy, though winter wet can be more problematic than cold.
Drought Tolerance:
High. Very drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for dry, low-maintenance gardens.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when soil is warm and well-drained.
Spacing:
Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Forms a large basal rosette up to 60 cm (24 inches) wide, with flowering spikes reaching 90–120 cm (36–48 inches) tall.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water sparingly. Avoid rich soils and excessive feeding, as this can reduce the intensity of foliage colour and lead to weak growth.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply a dry mulch (such as gravel) to improve drainage and protect the crown. Remove spent flower spikes after blooming to tidy the plant and encourage energy back into foliage. Remove damaged or dead leaves as needed.
Propagation:
Propagate by seed, as division is not typically suitable. Plants may self-seed in ideal conditions.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Forms a striking rosette of large, woolly, silvery-white leaves—highly ornamental and tactile.
Summer:
In early to mid-summer (June to July), tall branching stems carry pale yellow to creamy-white flowers. While attractive, the foliage remains the main feature.
Autumn:
Foliage may persist in good conditions, maintaining structure and colour.
Winter:
Evergreen to semi-evergreen in milder climates. Protect from excessive winter wet to prevent rot.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees and pollinators when in flower. The foliage is generally unpalatable to deer and rabbits.
Garden Use:
Ideal for gravel gardens, Mediterranean-style planting, dry borders, and architectural displays. Valued primarily for its bold, silvery foliage, which provides contrast and texture.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with drought-tolerant plants such as Lavender, Perovskia (Russian sage), Echinops, Stachys byzantina, and ornamental grasses. Combines especially well with purple, blue, and soft pastel flowers for contrast.
Transform your home and garden with Salvia argentea ‘Artemis’, a dramatic foliage plant that adds striking silver texture and architectural interest to sunny, dry garden spaces.
