Saintpaulia (African Violet)

Saintpaulia, commonly known as the African Violet, is a compact flowering houseplant with soft, slightly fuzzy leaves and delicate flowers in shades of purple, pink, blue, white and red. It’s a great choice for bright indoor spaces and can flower repeatedly throughout the year when given the right conditions.

Where to position

Choose a bright position with plenty of indirect light. An east- or west-facing windowsill can work well, while a little gentle morning or evening sunlight is usually fine.

Avoid strong, direct midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and cause faded or damaged foliage.

Saintpaulia can tolerate slightly lower light levels, although flowering may become less frequent.

Watering

• Allow the surface of the compost to dry slightly between waterings, while avoiding letting the plant become completely dry.
• Check the compost before watering.
• Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away.
• Avoid getting water on the leaves, as this can cause spotting or damage.
• Don't leave the plant sitting in water.
• Reduce watering slightly during the cooler, darker months.

Top watering tip: Water at the base of the plant or from below, rather than over the leaves. Room-temperature water is best.

Temperature & humidity

Saintpaulia enjoys warm, stable indoor temperatures and moderate to high humidity.

Keep away from cold draughts, chilly windows and radiators. It generally does well in normal household conditions, but appreciates some extra humidity if the air is particularly dry.

Avoid sudden changes in temperature, which can affect flowering and cause buds to drop.

Feeding & repotting

Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertiliser or a fertiliser formulated for African Violets.

Repot when the plant becomes root-bound or the compost starts to deteriorate, usually every year or two. Use a light, free-draining houseplant compost and a relatively small pot, as Saintpaulia prefers to be slightly pot-bound.

Common problems

Yellow or pale leaves
Can be caused by too much direct sunlight, overwatering or poor drainage. Older leaves may also naturally yellow and die back.

Brown or spotted leaves
Water sitting on the leaves can cause marks, particularly when exposed to bright sunlight. Overwatering or cold conditions can also contribute to leaf damage.

Drooping leaves
Often caused by underwatering, although overwatering and root problems can also cause wilting.

No flowers
Usually caused by insufficient light, although inconsistent watering, poor feeding or unsuitable temperatures can also affect flowering.

Crown or root rot
Often caused by excessive moisture or poor drainage. Allow the compost to dry slightly between waterings and make sure the pot has good drainage.

Pet & child safety

Saintpaulia (African Violet) is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a suitable choice for homes with pets. As with any houseplant, it is still best to discourage pets and young children from chewing or eating the plant.
