Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Best flowering occurs in full sun, though it will tolerate light shade, especially in warmer climates.
Soil:
Well-drained soil. Prefers moderately fertile, loamy soils but adapts to a range of soil types, including sandy or slightly poorer soils. Avoid heavy, waterlogged conditions. Tolerates neutral to slightly acidic or alkaline pH.
Exposure:
Suitable for both sheltered and moderately exposed sites. Hardy, making it reliable in most temperate gardens.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Tolerates short dry spells once established but prefers consistent moisture for best flowering.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when soil is workable and temperatures are mild.
Spacing:
Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Typically grows 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) tall and about 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) wide, forming loose, clump-forming growth.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth and flowering, but avoid overfeeding.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming. Cut back stems after the first flush of flowers to encourage a second bloom. Trim back to ground level in late autumn or early spring.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or autumn, or by seed. Division every few years helps maintain vigour.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fresh green, slightly hairy foliage emerges, forming a low clump.
Summer:
From early to late summer (June to August), produces open, saucer-shaped flowers in bright rose-pink with darker crimson veining and a contrasting darker eye. Flowers are held on slender, branching stems, creating a light, airy effect.
Autumn:
Flowering may continue into early autumn if regularly deadheaded. Foliage remains neat and green.
Winter:
Herbaceous perennial that dies back in winter. Remove old growth before new shoots emerge in spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees and other pollinators, providing a useful nectar source over a long flowering period.
Garden Use:
Ideal for cottage gardens, mixed borders, and informal plantings. Its airy habit makes it suitable for weaving through other perennials. Also useful in wildlife-friendly gardens.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with plants such as Geranium, Salvia, Nepeta, Coreopsis, and grasses. The pink flowers contrast beautifully with blues, purples, and soft yellows for a relaxed, natural look.
Transform your home and garden with Potentilla nepalensis ‘Miss Willmott’, a charming and long-flowering perennial that brings soft colour and movement to summer borders.
