Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering and sturdy stems. Too much shade can reduce blooms and cause weak growth.
Soil:
Well-drained soil. Prefers deep, fertile soils but adapts to average garden conditions, including sandy or loamy soils. Avoid waterlogged soil, particularly in winter. Thrives in neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
Exposure:
Best in open, sunny positions with good air circulation. Very hardy, suitable for most temperate climates.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Once established, tolerates dry spells, but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged drought.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in autumn or early spring. Autumn planting is ideal for strong root establishment and better flowering the following season.
Spacing:
Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Typically grows 70–90 cm (28–36 inches) tall and about 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) wide.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water occasionally during dry periods. Apply a light, balanced fertilizer in spring; avoid excessive feeding.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to conserve moisture while keeping the crown dry. Deadhead spent flowers or leave seed heads for ornamental interest. After flowering, foliage often dies back—cut back to ground level and allow new basal growth to develop later in the season.
Propagation:
Propagate by root cuttings in winter or division in autumn, though plants dislike disturbance. Can be grown from seed, but named cultivars may vary.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Large, bristly, deeply lobed green leaves emerge, forming a bold basal clump.
Summer:
Flowers in late spring to early summer (May to June). Produces large, satiny, deep crimson-red blooms with distinctive dark, almost black centres. The dramatic flowers are held on tall, sturdy stems.
Autumn:
Fresh basal foliage may reappear after summer dormancy, providing ground cover.
Winter:
Dies back in winter. Remove old foliage and allow the plant to rest until spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees and pollinators. Seed heads can provide structure and seasonal interest, and may benefit wildlife.
Garden Use:
Ideal for borders, cottage gardens, and naturalistic plantings. Best combined with later-emerging perennials to fill gaps after dormancy. Excellent for bold, early-season colour impact.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with Geranium, Nepeta, Salvia, Iris, and ornamental grasses. Combine with later bloomers such as Echinacea, Rudbeckia, or Persicaria to maintain continuous interest in the border.
Transform your home and garden with Papaver orientale ‘Beauty of Livermere’, a striking perennial renowned for its rich crimson blooms and dramatic presence in early summer gardens.
