Nephrolepis (Boston Fern)
The Boston Fern is a lush, leafy houseplant with long, arching fronds. It brings a fresh, woodland feel indoors and thrives when given plenty of moisture and humidity.
Where to position
Choose a bright position with indirect or filtered light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate fronds.
A bathroom or kitchen with good natural light can be an ideal position.
Watering
- Boston Ferns prefer to stay consistently moist and don't like being allowed to dry out completely.
- Check the compost regularly.
- Water when the surface starts to feel slightly dry.
- Allow excess water to drain away.
- Don't allow the root ball to become completely dry.
Top watering tip: Consistent moisture is important, but avoid leaving the plant sitting in water.
Temperature & humidity
Humidity is particularly important for Boston Ferns. They enjoy warm, humid conditions and can struggle in dry rooms.
Keep away from radiators, heaters and cold draughts. A humid bathroom or kitchen can be ideal.
Feeding & repotting
Feed every few weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant feed.
Repot when the roots become crowded, using a good-quality, moisture-retentive but free-draining houseplant compost.
Common problems
Brown or crispy fronds
Usually caused by dry compost or low humidity. Check the watering routine and move the plant away from sources of dry heat.
Yellowing fronds
Can be caused by overwatering, poor drainage or naturally ageing foliage. Check that excess water can escape.
Fronds dropping or looking sparse
The plant may be too dry, too warm or receiving too little humidity.
Top tips
- Keep it humid: Boston Ferns love moisture in the air.
- Don't let it dry out: Regular watering is important, particularly during warmer months.
- Keep away from radiators: Dry, hot air can quickly turn the fronds brown.
- Remove damaged fronds: Trim off completely brown or dead fronds to keep the plant looking tidy.
Pet & child safety
Boston Ferns are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a good choice for pet-friendly homes.
