Monstera
Monstera is a striking tropical houseplant known for its large, glossy leaves and distinctive splits and holes. With the right conditions, it can become an impressive feature plant.
Where to position
Choose a bright position with indirect light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Good light encourages larger, healthier leaves.
Watering
- Allow the top of the compost to dry slightly before watering.
- Check the compost before watering.
- Water thoroughly when the surface has dried.
- Allow excess water to drain away.
- Reduce watering during winter.
Temperature & humidity
Monstera enjoys warm, humid conditions. Keep away from cold draughts and radiators.
It appreciates higher humidity, particularly in centrally heated homes.
Feeding & repotting
Feed every few weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant feed.
Repot when the roots become crowded. Provide support such as a moss pole or plant support as the plant gets larger.
Common problems
Yellowing leaves
Often caused by overwatering. Check the compost and drainage.
Brown leaf edges
Can indicate dry air, underwatering or exposure to strong sunlight.
Small or unsplit leaves
Young Monstera naturally have smaller leaves, but mature plants may produce larger, more characteristic foliage with good light and support.
Top tips
- Give it good light: Bright, indirect light encourages strong growth.
- Keep humidity up: It will appreciate a humid environment.
- Give it support: A climbing support helps it develop naturally.
Pet & child safety
Monstera can be harmful if eaten, particularly to cats and dogs, so keep it away from pets and children.
