Growing Conditions

Light:
Thrives in full sun. Performs best with plenty of direct sunlight to maintain its striking blue-grey foliage colour.

Soil:
Prefers well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. Tolerates poor, dry soils and is especially suited to coastal and sandy conditions. Does not like heavy or waterlogged soils.

Exposure:
Ideal for exposed, windy locations, including coastal gardens. Very hardy and tolerant of salt spray.

Drought Tolerance:
Highly drought-tolerant once established. Requires minimal watering in dry periods, making it excellent for low-maintenance or xeriscape gardens.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or autumn. Early planting allows roots to establish before extremes of weather.

Spacing:
Space plants about 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Mature clumps typically reach 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) tall and wide.

Watering & Fertilisation:
Water during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, it requires little watering. Fertilisation is generally unnecessary but a light feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser can encourage growth.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to suppress weeds and retain moisture. Cut back old foliage to the ground in late winter or early spring before new shoots emerge to encourage fresh growth.

Propagation:
Propagate by division in early spring or early autumn. Divide every few years to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
New shoots emerge with fresh blue-green leaves, creating attractive clumps.

Summer:
Leaves mature to a striking blue-grey colour with a fine texture, adding year-round architectural interest. The plant produces tall, slender flowering spikes in summer, typically bluish-green but not overly showy.

Autumn:
Foliage colour often intensifies with cooler temperatures, maintaining strong blue hues.

Winter:
Evergreen or semi-evergreen in mild climates, retaining structure and colour through winter. In colder areas, leaves may die back but crowns survive for spring regrowth.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Provides shelter and habitat for insects and small wildlife. The flowering spikes can offer food for seed-eating birds.

Garden Use:
Excellent for coastal gardens, dune planting, rock gardens, wildlife gardens, and low-maintenance landscapes. Its striking blue foliage adds colour and texture contrast in mixed borders and naturalistic plantings.

Companion Plants:
Works well with:

  • Sea Holly (Eryngium)

  • Sedum

  • Lavandula

  • Grasses like Festuca glauca or Miscanthus

  • Heathers (Calluna) in acidic soils

Combines well with silver, blue, and purple foliage plants or vibrant summer-flowering perennials.
