Fittonia (Nerve Plant)
Fittonia, commonly known as the Nerve Plant, is a compact houseplant with beautiful veined leaves in shades of green, pink, red and white. It stays relatively small, making it ideal for shelves, desks and smaller spaces.
Where to position
Choose a bright to medium-light position with indirect light. Avoid strong, direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
Fittonia can tolerate lower light, although its colours may be less vibrant and growth can become slower.
Watering
- Fittonia likes its compost to stay consistently slightly moist.
- Check the compost regularly.
- Water when the surface begins to feel slightly dry.
- Allow excess water to drain away.
- Don't allow the compost to dry out completely.
- Avoid leaving the plant sitting in water.
Top watering tip: Fittonia can wilt dramatically when it gets too dry, but it will often recover quickly after watering. Try not to let it reach this stage regularly.
Temperature & humidity
Fittonia enjoys warm temperatures and high humidity.
Keep away from cold draughts and radiators. It can be a great choice for a bright, humid bathroom, provided there is enough natural light.
Feeding & repotting
Feed every few weeks during spring and summer with a diluted balanced houseplant feed.
Repot when the roots become crowded, using a good-quality, moisture-retentive but free-draining houseplant compost.
Common problems
Wilting leaves
Usually caused by the compost becoming too dry. Water thoroughly and maintain a more consistent watering routine.
Brown or crispy leaf edges
Often caused by low humidity, underwatering or too much direct sunlight.
Yellow leaves
Usually associated with overwatering or poor drainage. Allow excess water to drain away and check the compost before watering.
Leggy growth
Can occur when light levels are too low. Move the plant to a brighter position with indirect light and trim back long stems to encourage bushier growth.
Top tips
- Keep humidity high: Fittonia thrives in humid conditions.
- Don't let it dry out: Consistent moisture helps prevent wilting.
- Avoid direct sunlight: Its delicate leaves can scorch easily.
- Pinch out long stems to encourage a fuller, bushier plant.
- A humid bathroom can be an excellent position if it has good natural light.
Pet & child safety
Fittonia is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good choice for pet-friendly homes. However, it's still best to discourage pets and children from chewing on the plant.
