Dieffenbachia
Dieffenbachia is a striking tropical houseplant with large, beautifully patterned leaves. It makes an impressive feature plant and is relatively easy to care for with the right conditions.
Where to position
Choose a bright position with indirect light. It can tolerate slightly lower light, but avoid strong, direct sunlight as this can scorch the leaves.
Watering
- Keep the compost lightly moist, but never waterlogged.
- Check the top of the compost before watering.
- Water when the surface feels slightly dry.
- Allow excess water to drain away.
- Reduce watering during autumn and winter.
Top watering tip: Avoid letting the plant sit in water, as consistently wet compost can cause root problems.
Temperature & humidity
Dieffenbachia enjoys warm, humid conditions. Keep it away from cold draughts, radiators and sudden changes in temperature.
If your home is particularly dry, increased humidity can help keep the leaves looking healthy.
Feeding & repotting
Feed every few weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant feed.
Repot when the roots become crowded, using a good-quality, free-draining houseplant compost.
Common problems
Yellowing leaves
Often caused by overwatering. Check the compost and make sure excess water can drain away.
Brown or crispy leaf edges
Can be caused by dry air, underwatering or exposure to direct sunlight.
Drooping leaves
Check the compost. The plant may be thirsty, although consistently wet compost can also cause similar symptoms.
Top tips
- Bright but indirect light helps maintain healthy, attractive foliage.
- Keep watering balanced: Don't allow the compost to stay constantly wet.
- Keep it warm: Protect it from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
Pet & child safety
Dieffenbachia is toxic if eaten. Its sap can cause irritation and swelling of the mouth and throat, so keep it well away from pets and young children. Take care when handling the plant, particularly when pruning or repotting.
