Codiaeum (Joseph’s Coat)
Codiaeum, commonly known as Joseph’s Coat or Croton, is a colourful houseplant prized for its bold, glossy leaves in shades of green, yellow, orange, red and burgundy. It makes a striking feature plant when given plenty of light.
Where to position
Choose a bright position with plenty of indirect light. Codiaeum needs good light to maintain its vibrant leaf colours.
A little gentle morning or evening sun can be beneficial, but avoid strong midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering
- Keep the compost slightly moist, but never waterlogged.
- Check the top of the compost before watering.
- Water when the surface feels slightly dry.
- Allow excess water to drain away.
- Avoid letting the plant sit in water.
- Reduce watering during the cooler, darker months.
Top watering tip: Try to keep watering consistent, as sudden changes between very dry and very wet compost can cause leaf drop.
Temperature & humidity
Codiaeum enjoys warm temperatures and good humidity.
Keep away from cold draughts, chilly windows and radiators. It can be sensitive to sudden changes in temperature, so avoid moving it frequently.
A humid bathroom or kitchen can be a good position if there is plenty of natural light.
Feeding & repotting
Feed every few weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant feed.
Repot when the roots become crowded, using a good-quality, free-draining houseplant compost. Codiaeum generally prefers being slightly snug in its pot rather than being over-potted.
Common problems
Leaf drop
Often caused by changes in temperature, draughts, low light, underwatering or inconsistent watering. Codiaeum can be particularly sensitive to changes in its environment.
Leaves losing their colour
Usually a sign that the plant isn't getting enough light. Move it to a brighter position, avoiding harsh midday sun.
Brown or crispy leaves
Can be caused by dry conditions, underwatering or too much direct sunlight.
Yellow leaves
Often associated with overwatering or poor drainage. Check that excess water can escape freely from the pot.
Top tips
- Give it plenty of light: Good light helps maintain its vibrant colours.
- Keep it warm: Protect from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
- Keep watering consistent: Avoid letting the compost become completely dry.
- Don't overwater: Always allow excess water to drain away.
- Avoid moving it unnecessarily: Codiaeum can respond to sudden environmental changes by dropping leaves.
Pet & child safety
Codiaeum is toxic if eaten and can cause irritation and stomach upset. Keep it away from pets and children, and avoid contact with the plant's sap when handling it.
