Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Performs best in full sun where foliage develops its characteristic silvery-green, frosted appearance. In partial shade, growth is softer but may lose some of its sheen.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained soil. Adapts to loam, sand, or even clay if well-drained. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid heavy, soggy, or waterlogged soils, especially in winter.
Exposure:
Grows well in both sheltered and moderately exposed sites. Hardy in USDA zones 6a–10b (UK H4), though it may need winter protection in colder climates. Evergreen in mild winters; may become semi-evergreen in colder areas.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Tolerates short dry spells once established, but performs best with consistent moisture in well-drained soil.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when the weather is mild and moisture levels support root development.
Spacing:
Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Forms compact, graceful mounds about 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) tall and wide.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, water as needed in dry weather. Fertilize lightly in early spring with a general-purpose, slow-release fertilizer or apply compost mulch.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. In late winter or early spring, comb through or trim to remove any dead or tattered foliage. Avoid cutting too close to the crown.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or early autumn. Best done every few years to rejuvenate older clumps. Can also be grown from seed, though less commonly.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fresh, narrow, curling blades emerge with a frosty, silvery-green tint that gives the plant its name.
Summer:
Graceful, arching foliage maintains its shimmering, windswept appearance. Subtle, inconspicuous flower spikes may appear but are not ornamental.
Autumn:
Continues to provide movement, colour, and texture in borders and containers.
Winter:
Evergreen to semi-evergreen depending on climate. Retains attractive structure and colour in mild winters; may need tidying in spring after exposure to frost or snow.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Provides cover for small insects and garden wildlife. Not typically a pollinator plant but beneficial in biodiverse plantings.
Garden Use:
Excellent in contemporary, coastal, and naturalistic gardens. Ideal for softening edges of borders, rock gardens, container planting, or massed as low-maintenance groundcover. Adds movement and texture, especially when planted in drifts.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with Heuchera, Festuca glauca, Sedum, Echinacea, Stipa tenuissima, and other low-growing grasses or perennials. Its silvery foliage contrasts well with darker greens, purples, and blues.
