Growing Conditions

Light:
Partial shade to full shade. Performs best in bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Can tolerate some morning sun, especially in cooler climates, but prolonged exposure to hot afternoon sun may scorch the foliage.

Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Grows well in loamy or sandy soils enriched with organic matter. Best in slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions.

Exposure:
Thrives in sheltered locations, making it ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and containers. Hardy, tolerating frost but benefiting from protection in harsh winters.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Needs regular watering during dry spells, especially in sunnier spots. More tolerant of dry conditions once established, particularly in shade, but looks best with consistent moisture.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn, when soil is workable and conditions are mild, allowing for strong root establishment.

Spacing:
Space plants 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Forms neat, arching clumps about 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) tall and wide, gradually forming a dense groundcover.

Watering & Fertilization:
Keep soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, water as needed, especially during hot or dry periods. Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or enrich soil with compost or leaf mould.

Mulching & Pruning:
Apply a light mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. In late winter or early spring, trim back any tattered or old foliage to refresh the appearance and encourage healthy new growth.

Propagation:
Divide clumps in spring or early autumn. Division every 2–3 years helps rejuvenate growth and manage size. Can be grown from seed, but division is quicker and more reliable.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Fresh variegated foliage emerges with clean, crisp white margins and deep green centres—visually striking in shade.

Summer:
Retains vibrant foliage through summer. Occasionally produces fine, brown flower spikes, though not highly ornamental.

Autumn:
Maintains colour and structure into autumn. The variegation contrasts beautifully with fall hues of companion plants.

Winter:
Evergreen in mild climates. In colder areas, foliage may brown or flatten but can be tidied in early spring. Offers winter interest and texture when not covered by snow.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Provides low shelter for insects and ground-dwelling critters. Not a significant source of nectar or pollen but contributes to a biodiverse, layered habitat.

Garden Use:
Excellent for shady borders, underplanting larger shrubs, edging paths, containers, and rock gardens. Adds year-round form, texture, and brightness in low-light areas. Useful as a non-invasive groundcover.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Hostas, Heucheras, Ferns, Brunnera, Tiarella, Pulmonaria, and Epimedium. The clean variegated foliage contrasts effectively with bold-leaved plants and spring ephemerals.
