Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Flowers best in full sun, though it appreciates light shade in hotter climates to prevent stress and prolong blooming.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained soil. Prefers fertile, humus-rich soil but tolerates a range of soil types, including clay and loam. Avoid waterlogged conditions. Thrives in neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
Exposure:
Suitable for both sheltered and exposed sites. Very hardy, making it reliable in most temperate climates.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Prefers consistent moisture but can tolerate short dry spells once established.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when soil is workable and temperatures are mild.
Spacing:
Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Typically grows 40–60 cm (16–24 inches) tall and about 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) wide, forming clump-forming, upright growth.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to encourage vigorous growth and flowering.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent flowers to extend the blooming period. Cut back stems after flowering to encourage a second flush of blooms. Trim back to ground level in late autumn or early spring.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or autumn to maintain vigour and control spread. Can also be grown from seed.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Basal rosettes of fresh green leaves emerge, forming a dense clump.
Summer:
Blooms in early to mid-summer (June to July). Produces dense clusters of upward-facing, bell-shaped pure white flowers atop sturdy stems—excellent for brightening borders.
Autumn:
Foliage may remain low and green; cut back if it becomes untidy.
Winter:
Herbaceous perennial that dies back in winter. Remove old growth before new shoots emerge in spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees and other pollinators. Flowers provide a valuable nectar source during early summer.
Garden Use:
Ideal for borders, cottage gardens, and naturalistic plantings. Works well in mixed perennial beds and can be used toward the front or middle of borders. Also suitable for cutting gardens.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with Geranium, Salvia, Nepeta, Alchemilla mollis, and ornamental grasses. The crisp white flowers contrast well with purple, blue, and pink-toned plants for a soft, harmonious display.
Transform your home and garden with Campanula glomerata ‘Alba’, a classic and elegant perennial that brings fresh white clusters and timeless charm to early summer borders.
