    Calathea

Calatheas are loved for their beautifully patterned leaves and distinctive foliage. They make an eye-catching addition to a home but appreciate a little more attention than some easier-care houseplants.

    Where to position

Place in bright, indirect light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can fade or scorch the leaves.

    Watering

    • Keep the compost evenly moist but not soggy.
    • Check the top of the compost regularly.
    • Water when it begins to feel slightly dry.
    • Don't allow the plant to sit in excess water.
    • Avoid letting the compost completely dry out.

    Temperature & humidity

Calatheas enjoy warm, humid conditions. Keep away from cold draughts, radiators and sudden changes in temperature.

They benefit from increased humidity, particularly during winter when central heating can dry the air.

    Feeding & repotting

Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant feed.

Repot when necessary using a moisture-retentive but well-draining houseplant compost.

    Common problems

    Brown, crispy leaf edges
Often linked to dry air, underwatering or inconsistent watering.

    Curling leaves
The plant may be too dry, too cold or exposed to a draught.

    Faded leaf patterns
Too much direct sunlight can cause the beautiful markings to lose their colour.

    Top tips

    • Humidity matters: Keep away from very dry areas.
    • Keep watering consistent: Don't let it repeatedly dry out completely.
    • Avoid direct sun: Bright, filtered light is ideal.

    Pet & child safety

Calatheas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
