Begonia Beleaf
Begonia Beleaf is a colourful foliage plant with beautifully patterned leaves in shades of green, silver, pink, purple and red. It makes a striking indoor plant and is particularly suited to adding colour to bright rooms.
Where to position
Choose a bright position with indirect light. Good light helps maintain the beautiful leaf colours and patterns.
Avoid strong, direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. A spot near an east- or west-facing window can work well.
Watering
Keep the compost slightly moist, but never waterlogged.
- Check the top of the compost before watering.
- Water when the surface feels slightly dry.
- Allow excess water to drain away.
- Avoid letting the plant sit in water.
- Reduce watering during the cooler, darker months.
Top watering tip: Try to water the compost rather than regularly soaking the leaves, as wet foliage can encourage fungal problems.
Temperature & humidity
Begonia Beleaf prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity.
Keep away from cold draughts, chilly windows and radiators. It can appreciate extra humidity during dry indoor conditions, but good airflow is also important.
Feeding & repotting
Feed every few weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant feed.
Repot when the roots become crowded, using a good-quality, free-draining houseplant compost. Avoid using a pot that is much larger than the existing root ball, as excess compost can retain too much moisture.
Common problems
Brown or crispy leaf edges
Usually caused by dry compost, low humidity or too much direct sunlight.
Yellow or soft leaves
Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Allow the compost to dry slightly before watering again.
Leaf spots or damaged foliage
Can occur when leaves stay wet for long periods or when airflow is poor. Avoid regularly misting the leaves and remove badly damaged foliage.
Drooping leaves
May indicate that the plant is too dry, although overwatering can also cause similar symptoms.
Top tips
- Bright, indirect light helps maintain vibrant leaf colours.
- Water carefully: Keep the compost slightly moist but never soggy.
- Avoid wet leaves: Water the compost directly where possible.
- Keep it warm: Protect from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
- Don't over-pot: A slightly snug pot can help prevent the compost staying wet for too long.
Pet & child safety
Begonias are toxic if eaten, particularly to cats and dogs. Keep Begonia Beleaf away from pets and children and discourage chewing on the leaves.
