Areca Palm
The Areca Palm is a popular tropical houseplant with graceful, feathery foliage. It makes a lovely statement plant and can add a fresh, leafy feel to a room.
Where to position
Choose a bright position with plenty of indirect light. Avoid strong, direct midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering
- Keep the compost lightly moist, but never waterlogged.
- Check the top of the compost before watering.
- Water when it feels slightly dry.
- Allow excess water to drain away.
- Reduce watering during the cooler, darker months.
Top watering tip: Don't let the plant sit in water, as consistently wet roots can lead to problems.
Temperature & humidity
Areca Palms enjoy warm rooms and good humidity. Keep away from cold draughts, radiators and sudden temperature changes.
If the air is particularly dry, especially in winter, occasional misting or a nearby humidifier can help.
Feeding & repotting
Feed every few weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant feed.
Repot when the roots become crowded, using a good-quality, free-draining houseplant compost.
Common problems
Brown leaf tips
Often caused by dry air, inconsistent watering or water quality. Check humidity and watering habits.
Yellowing leaves
Can be caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Allow the compost to dry slightly between waterings.
Pale or stretched growth
The plant may need more light. Move it to a brighter position.
Top tips
- Bright but indirect light keeps the foliage looking its best.
- Keep humidity up if your home is particularly dry.
- Avoid extremes: Keep away from cold draughts and hot radiators.
Pet & child safety
Areca Palm is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
