Anthurium
Anthuriums are popular for their glossy green leaves and long-lasting, colourful flowers. They make an attractive feature plant and, with the right conditions, can flower repeatedly throughout the year.
Where to position
Choose a bright position with plenty of indirect light. Avoid strong, direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and flowers.
Good natural light will also encourage flowering.
Watering
- Keep the compost lightly moist, but never waterlogged.
- Check the top of the compost before watering.
- Water when the surface begins to feel slightly dry.
- Allow excess water to drain away.
- Reduce watering during the cooler, darker months.
Top watering tip: Anthuriums don't like sitting in wet compost. Good drainage is just as important as regular watering.
Temperature & humidity
Anthuriums enjoy warm, humid conditions. Keep them away from cold draughts, radiators and sudden changes in temperature.
They appreciate additional humidity, particularly during the drier winter months.
Feeding & repotting
Feed every few weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant or flowering-plant feed.
Repot when the roots become crowded, using a good-quality, free-draining houseplant compost.
Common problems
Yellowing leaves
Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Check the compost before watering again.
Brown leaf tips
Can be caused by dry air, underwatering or too much direct sunlight.
Flowers not appearing
The plant may need more light, or it may simply need time to recover after flowering.
Drooping leaves
Check the compost. The plant may be thirsty, although overwatering and root problems can also cause drooping.
Top tips
- Bright, indirect light encourages healthy growth and flowering.
- Keep humidity up: Anthuriums appreciate moist air, particularly in centrally heated homes.
- Don't overwater: Let the surface of the compost dry slightly before watering.
- Remove faded flowers: This encourages the plant to put its energy into new growth and flowers.
Pet & child safety
Anthuriums can be harmful if eaten, particularly to cats and dogs. Keep the plant away from pets and young children.
