Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is an easy-care succulent with thick, fleshy leaves. It's ideal for bright rooms and is particularly forgiving if you occasionally forget to water it.
Where to position
Choose a bright, sunny position, ideally near a south- or west-facing window. Plenty of natural light helps keep the plant compact and healthy.
Watering
Aloe Vera likes to dry out between waterings.
- Check the compost before watering.
- Water thoroughly once the compost has dried out.
- Always allow excess water to drain away.
- Water less frequently during autumn and winter.
Top watering tip: Overwatering is one of the most common problems with Aloe Vera. It's much happier being slightly too dry than sitting in wet compost.
Temperature & humidity
Normal household temperatures are ideal. Keep your Aloe Vera away from cold draughts and protect it from frost.
It doesn't require high humidity, so there's no need to mist the leaves.
Feeding & repotting
Feed occasionally during spring and summer with a suitable succulent or houseplant feed.
Repot when the plant becomes root-bound, using a free-draining compost and a pot with drainage holes.
Common problems
Soft, yellowing or collapsing leaves
Usually caused by overwatering. Allow the compost to dry out and check that excess water can drain freely.
Thin or stretched growth
The plant may not be getting enough light. Move it to a brighter position.
Brown or damaged leaves
Check the plant's watering and light levels. Remove badly damaged leaves if necessary.
Top tips
- Let it dry out: Aloe Vera prefers dry compost between waterings.
- Give it plenty of light: A bright windowsill is usually ideal.
- Good drainage is essential: Never allow the pot to sit in water.
Pet & child safety
Aloe Vera can be harmful if eaten, so keep it away from pets and young children.
