    Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen)

Aglaonema, commonly known as the Chinese Evergreen, is an easy-care houseplant with attractive patterned foliage. It’s a great choice for adding greenery to rooms with lower light levels.

    Where to position

Choose a bright to medium-light position with indirect light. Aglaonema can tolerate lower light, although growth may be slower and colourful varieties may lose some of their markings.

Avoid strong, direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

    Watering

Allow the top of the compost to dry slightly between waterings.

    • Check the compost before watering.
    • Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away.
    • Don't leave the plant sitting in water.
    • Reduce watering during the cooler, darker months.

Top watering tip: Aglaonema is more tolerant of being slightly too dry than sitting in constantly wet compost.

    Temperature & humidity

Aglaonema enjoys warm indoor temperatures and moderate humidity.

Keep away from cold draughts, chilly windows and radiators. It generally does well in normal household humidity, but appreciates a little extra humidity during very dry conditions.

    Feeding & repotting

Feed every few weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant feed.

Repot when the roots become crowded, usually every couple of years, using a good-quality, free-draining houseplant compost.

    Common problems

    Yellow leaves
Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Allow the compost to dry slightly before watering again.

    Brown or crispy leaf edges
Can be caused by dry air, underwatering or too much direct sunlight.

    Drooping leaves
Usually a sign that the plant is too dry, although overwatering and root problems can also cause wilting.

    Loss of leaf markings
Variegated varieties may lose some of their colour and patterning in very low light.

    Top tips

    • Avoid direct sun: Bright, indirect light keeps the foliage looking its best.
    • Don't overwater: Let the top of the compost dry slightly between waterings.
    • Keep it warm: Protect from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
    • Wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust and keep the foliage looking fresh.
    • Rotate the plant every few weeks for even growth.

    Pet & child safety

Aglaonema is toxic if chewed or eaten, particularly to cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach of pets and children.
