Spring is a great time of year to start paying your lawn some much needed attention. Whether you're renovating a tired looking lawn, sowing new seed or repairing patches. A few simple procedures, the right products and a bit of hard work are essential in gaining a lawn you can be proud of this summer. Common Lawn Problems |

Weed Control Worm Casts Worm Casts shouldn't be ignored. When squashed, the casts make ideal seed beds for weed seeds. When they appear, let them fully dry and then sweep them away with a stiff bristle brush before mowing. Thatch Leaving clippings on the grass will gradually build thatch. Thatch is a layer of organic matter at soil level. Thatch prevents rain getting through and increases the likelihood of disease. Rake out thatch in September with a garden rake or scarifyer. To prevent recurrence, collect the grass clippings if your mower has a box, or rake clippings after mowing. Pale Grass is a symptom of malnutrition. Without the correctly balanced diet the lawn will stay weak and pale as it has used up all available nutrients in the soil. Supplementary feeding with nutrient rich lawn treatment is the only way to replace these lost foods. Simply watering will not solve this problem. Scalped Patches Scalped Patches are a problem resulting from mowing the grass too short. Shaving the lawn doesn't save time and often leaves bare patches vulnerable to invasion by weeds and moss. Fill in any obvious hollows with Arthur Bowers Lawn dressing and cut the grass to a minimum of a couple of centimetres in length. If the overall grass cover of your lawn is thin or there are noticeable bare patches around the lawn then over-seeding is called for. 1. Rake the Area. Use a rake to loosen the soil surface and remove any obvious weeds or stones. A sprinkling of Arthur Bowers Lawn Dressing worked into your existing surface will help to provide a fine seed bed. 2. Sow the Seed. Choose one of the Johnsons Grass Seed mixtures and apply evenly over the lawn. Rake into the soil surface so that the seed is covered. 3. Keep The Lawn Well Watered. Water the area every few days if the weather is dry. 4. Repair Bare Patches. Well worn areas, goal mouths and race tracks need to be re-seeded. You will get hard- wearing results from Johnsons General Purpose Grass Seed or Johnsons Lawn Feed with added Grass Seed Kit. Follow the directions on the packaging for best results. Don't forget to persuade children to move play areas around the garden next summer. We also sell quality rolls of turf at all our garden centres. |
